Fire Destroys S. Dennis Barn, Arson Ruled Out

Sat, 02/19/2011 - 10:13 am By Al Campbell

SOUTH DENNIS – Dennis and Middle township firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 808 Court House-South Dennis Road at 9:10 a.m. Sat., Feb. 19.

Volunteers from Dennis, Ocean View, Belleplain, Goshen and Court House responded and formed a tanker relay from Dennis Lake. Belleplain Emergency Corps responded with its large van and rescue unit.

Within less than 10 minutes the fire was subdued, but the entire roof of the barn on fire was gone, and firefighters continued to pour water on the smoking remnants and toss out charred material.

State Police at the Woodbine station, who also responded, said when they arrived at 9:14 a.m., the barn, which is located behind a residence, was fully engulfed in flames. Troopers also said three other small storage dwellings on the property sustained fire damage.

Police said there were no injuries.

According to a release issued from the Woodbine station, Dennisville firefighters extinguished the fire with assistance from Belleplain, Goshen, Court House, Ocean View and Woodbine fire companies. Belleplain Emergency Corps also assisted on the scene, the release said.

Traffic on Court House-South Dennis Road was detoured because of the fire.

State Police said arson is not suspected, but added the actual cause of the fire was still undetermined hours after an investigation was conducted by Richard Harron of the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Banner Plane Among Many Who Call in Car Fire in Court House

COURT HOUSE-- Sat, 08/14/2010 - 4:57 pm  At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, Middle Township Police Communications received numerous "911" calls of a car fire on County Route 657SH (Stone Harbor Boulevard), including one from an unidentified banner plane, flying overhead. Callers reported being able to see the thick black smoke from the Garden State Parkway, three miles to the west. Other calls came from within Harbor Landing, the condominium complex where the car came to final rest. Police reports from the scene indicated that Shawn O'Donnell, 32, from Blue Bell, PA, was driving his 2004 Audi A4, with his five year old son, and headed to Stone Harbor. O'Donnell told police he was stopped in traffic, just west of the bridge going into Stone Harbor, when smoke starting coming out from the passenger's side dashboard. O'Donnell said he quickly pulled out of traffic, into the nearest parking lot which happened to be the Harbor Landing, parking lot. O'Donnell said he quickly exited the vehicle with his son, and then, attempted to removed his valuables from the car. All that remains are melted toys, burned brief case and a stroller. Police communications then began to receive a flood of calls from the "911" system, as well as the main number to the station. Patrolman Julio Ruiz was dispatched to the call and could also see smoke from the Parkway. Upon his arrival, Ptl. Ruiz said the car was fully engulfed and there wasn't anything he could do but wait for Fire personnel to arrive on-scene. Court House Fire Company was dispatched to the scene and extinguished the fire, with the assistance of the Stone Harbor Fire Company. There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire, and initial reports indicate that there was an electrical malfunction, possibly from the wiper motor that was replaced recently, which is believed to have caused the fire. The vehicle and most of it's contents were destroyed along with a section of the parking lot. One other vehicle in the lot at the time, was reported to have minor heat damage and ashes from the fire. The Middle Township Police Department is happy that everyone is safe that was in the car at the time. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the private citizens and planner plane pilot, who promptly reported the fire, thereby limiting the extent of the damage. Middle Township is also very proud of our volunteer fire companies, and the solid working relationship with surrounding communities, as was the case with this call, and the Stone Harbor Fire Department. The brave men and women of these fire companies respond to numerous calls throughout the year, and are credited for saving many lives and property, as a result of their quick actions.

Court House Firefighters Respond to Shed Fire, Explosion Reported 3/20/2010

Candle starts fire in Cape May Court House home, three escape unharmed     Friday, February 12, 2010

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE - Firefighters from Cape May Court House responded Friday to a house fire at 5 Ryan Run in the Dias Creek section of Middle Township. The fire was quickly contained and no injures were reported. The fire was reported about 12:30- 12:45 pm. The fire started by a candle damaged the Ryan Lane home but all three occupants were able to get out. "It was me, my mom and my daughter. I called 911 immediately and I just got everybody out," said Michelle Rhinesmith. Rhinesmith said her two sons, Justin, 17, and Nicholas, 14 were not home at the time. The Rhinesmiths had power but her daughter, Kayla, 8, who was off school for the holiday, was home and had a candle lit. "My daughter was taking a bath and decided to light a candle. I think it must have gone up a shower curtain. I was in the next room," Rhinesmith said. The fire was called in at about 12:45 p.m. Cape May Court House firefighters responded within minutes and four of them immediately donned air packs and went to the second floor bathroom. "An aggressive interior attack stopped that fire," said Fire Capt. Jeff Conlin. "It saved that house," said Fire Chief Paul Hand. Tankers from other companies had been called but were not needed. Stone Harbor firefighters sent a pumper to cover the Cape May Court House station. Hand said the fire started in the upstairs bathroom from the candle but he said it initially ignited a pile of books. "There's quite a bit of damage. I ‘d say $10,000 to $15,000," said Hand. Rhinesmith said she would stay at her in-laws, who live locally, until the house is fixed. About 20 volunteers responded to the two-story house and set up on a snow-covered street. There are no hydrants on Ryan Lane so lines were laid to the nearest one off Dias Creek Road while pumpers were en route, but they were recalled before arriving. When firefighters arrived, Rhinesmith and her daughter Kayla and mother Helen O'Brien were already out of the house. Two cats and a hamster were still unaccounted for as of press time. Rhinesmith thanked the police and firefighters at the scene. "They were awesome," said Rhinesmith.
